About Project 39A

Project 39A is a specialised initiative of National Law University, Delhi, focusing on issues relating to the criminal justice system in India. Inspired by Article 39-A of the Constitution of India, the project combines empirical research with pro bono litigation to address systemic challenges in the administration of criminal justice.

The project aims to generate informed discussions and policy interventions in areas that directly impact access to justice and the protection of human rights.

Project 39A accepts internship applications throughout the year and is committed to providing interns with meaningful learning experiences.

Areas of Work Under Project 39A

Selected interns may get an opportunity to work on the following areas:

Death Penalty

  • Research relating to death penalty jurisprudence
  • Litigation support and case analysis

Forensic Science

  • Research with a particular emphasis on DNA forensics
  • Examination of forensic practices within the criminal justice system

Legal Aid

  • Access to legal representation in criminal proceedings
  • Strengthening legal aid mechanisms in India

Mental Health and Criminal Justice

  • Exploring the intersection between mental health and criminal law
  • Research on rights of individuals with mental health conditions within the justice system

Torture

  • Documentation and analysis of custodial violence and torture-related issues
  • Advocacy and legal research initiatives

Eligibility Criteria

Applications are invited from students enrolled in recognised undergraduate or postgraduate programmes in India and abroad.

Eligible disciplines include:

  • Law
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Management
  • Media and Communications
  • Other disciplines (applications considered on merit)

The interdisciplinary nature of the internship allows students from diverse academic backgrounds to contribute meaningfully to the work undertaken by Project 39A.

Internship Duration

The duration of the internship is as follows:

Full-Time Internship

  • Minimum Duration: 4 Weeks
  • Maximum Duration: 12 Weeks

Applicants must clearly mention their preferred internship dates in the application.

Part-Time Internship

Although part-time applications are considered, preference is given to full-time interns.

Selected part-time interns will be required to intern for a minimum period of 12 weeks.
