Bar Council of India Releases Subject-Wise Importance for AIBE XXI

Bar Council of India has released the official syllabus and subject-wise question distribution for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE XXI). The notification highlights the most important subjects that candidates must focus on while preparing for the bar exam.

According to the official syllabus, the examination will contain 100 questions from 19 law subjects, with certain core subjects carrying significantly higher weightage.

Constitutional Law Remains the Most Important Subject

Among all subjects, Constitutional Law carries the highest weightage with 10 questions in the examination.

This subject covers topics such as:

  • Fundamental Rights
  • Directive Principles of State Policy
  • Separation of Powers
  • Judicial Review
  • Constitutional Remedies

Since Constitutional Law forms the backbone of the Indian legal system, candidates are advised to prepare landmark Supreme Court judgments along with constitutional provisions.

Criminal Procedure & Civil Procedure Carry Major Weightage

Another highly important subject in AIBE XXI is Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and the new Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which together carry 10 questions in the exam.

Similarly, the Code of Civil Procedure (CPC) also carries 10 questions, making it one of the most crucial procedural law subjects for candidates.

These subjects are particularly important because they deal with court procedures and legal practice, which are essential for advocates.

Evidence Law and IPC/BNS Also Important

The syllabus also assigns significant weightage to criminal law subjects such as:

  • Evidence Act & Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam – 8 Questions
  • Indian Penal Code (IPC) & Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) – 8 Questions

These subjects are fundamental for litigation practice and therefore receive high representation in the examination.

Other Important Subjects with High Question Count

Apart from core procedural laws, several other subjects also have notable weightage:

  • Family Law – 8 Questions
  • Contract Law, Specific Relief, Property Law & Negotiable Instruments – 8 Questions
  • Law of Torts including Motor Vehicles Act & Consumer Protection – 5 Questions

Candidates preparing for the AIBE examination should prioritize these subjects after covering the major procedural laws.

Moderate and Low Weightage Subjects

Some subjects carry fewer questions but still remain important for scoring additional marks:

  • Labour & Industrial Law – 4 Questions
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution – 4 Questions
  • Professional Ethics & Bar Council Rules – 4 Questions
  • Public Interest Litigation – 4 Questions
  • Taxation Law – 4 Questions

Subjects like Cyber Law, Environmental Law, Company Law, Land Acquisition Act, and Intellectual Property Laws have 2 questions each.

Preparation Strategy for AIBE XXI

Experts suggest candidates follow a strategic approach:

  1. Focus first on Constitutional Law, CPC, CrPC/BNSS, Evidence, and IPC/BNS
  2. Revise Family Law and Contract Law thoroughly
  3. Cover smaller subjects for quick revision and scoring

Since AIBE is an open book examination, candidates should also prepare proper indexing of Bare Acts for quick reference during the exam.

Why AIBE is Important for Law Graduates

The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is mandatory for law graduates enrolled with State Bar Councils. Candidates who clear the exam receive the Certificate of Practice (COP) from the Bar Council of India, allowing them to practice law in Indian courts.
