Bar Council of India Trust Releases Syllabus for AIBE XXI

Bar Council of India through the Bar Council of India Trust has released the official syllabus and subject-wise distribution of questions for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE XXI).

The syllabus notification dated 02 March 2026 outlines the subjects and number of questions that will appear in the AIBE examination. The exam will consist of 100 questions covering 19 law subjects.

The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is conducted by the Bar Council of India to assess whether law graduates possess the necessary skills to practice law in Indian courts.

AIBE XXI 2026 Exam Pattern

The examination will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) based on core law subjects taught in LL.B programmes.

Major Legal Subjects in AIBE XXI

These subjects together account for more than 40% of the total questions, making them crucial for candidates preparing for the bar exam.

New Criminal Laws Included in the Syllabus

The syllabus now includes new criminal laws introduced by the Government of India:

  • Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) – replacing IPC
  • Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) – replacing CrPC
  • Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 (BSA) – replacing the Evidence Act

Candidates preparing for AIBE XXI should focus on both old provisions and their updated equivalents under the new criminal law framework.

Importance of AIBE Examination

The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is mandatory for law graduates who wish to practice law in India.

After clearing the examination, candidates receive the Certificate of Practice (COP) issued by the Bar Council of India.

Without clearing AIBE, advocates enrolled with State Bar Councils cannot practice independently in courts.
