Lucknow University Starts Ph.D Admission Process for Session 2026-27
Lucknow University has officially started the Ph.D Admission process for the academic session 2026-27. The university released an official notification announcing that the online application process has commenced from May 27, 2026. Interested and eligible candidates can apply through the official website of Lucknow University before the last date of June 30, 2026.
The admission process will be conducted for both Full-Time and Part-Time Ph.D programmes across various disciplines offered by the university. Candidates are advised to carefully read the Ph.D Ordinance 2026 and admission guidelines before submitting the online application form.
According to the official notification issued by the Office of Admission, Lucknow University, applicants can complete the registration process through the university support portal available at the official website. The university has also clarified the application fee structure for different categories of candidates.
General, OBC and EWS category candidates will have to pay an application fee of Rs 2000, while SC, ST and Divyang candidates are required to pay Rs 1000 as the application fee for Ph.D admission.
Eligibility Criteria for Lucknow University Ph.D Admission 2026
Lucknow University has released detailed eligibility conditions for admission into the Ph.D programme for the academic session 2026-27. Candidates possessing a 4-year undergraduate degree or a postgraduate degree with at least 55 percent marks are eligible to apply for admission.
The university has also provided relaxation of 5 percent marks for candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC Non-Creamy Layer, Differently-Abled and EWS categories according to UGC norms.
Candidates applying after completing a 4-year undergraduate programme must have secured at least 75 percent marks or equivalent grade in their qualifying examination. Additionally, such candidates are required to possess at least one publication in a peer-reviewed or refereed journal.
Foreign degree holders from accredited institutions recognized by authorized agencies are also eligible for admission into the Ph.D programme at Lucknow University.
Categories of Ph.D Programme Offered
Lucknow University will offer admission in the following categories under the Ph.D programme:
- Full-Time Research Scholar
- Part-Time Research Scholar
- International Research Scholar
The Full-Time Ph.D scholars will be treated as regular research students of the university. Such candidates will be required to complete a minimum residency period of three years during the course of research.
The university has clearly stated that Full-Time research scholars cannot accept paid assignments other than research fellowships, research assistantships or similar academic engagements during the period of research work.
For Part-Time Ph.D admission, candidates must either be employed professionals with a valid No Objection Certificate from their employer or outstanding working professionals from non-government organizations in their respective fields.
Three-Phase Admission Process for Ph.D Admission
Lucknow University will conduct the Ph.D admission process in three phases.
Phase 1
Candidates who have qualified fellowship examinations such as UGC-JRF, CSIR-JRF, ICAR, ICMR, DBT-JRF or AICTE Doctoral Fellowship will be considered in the first phase.
Phase 2
Candidates qualified in UGC-NET or CSIR-NET and eligible for Assistant Professor or Ph.D admission will be considered in the second phase if seats remain vacant after Phase 1 admissions.
Phase 3
The remaining seats after completion of Phase 1 and Phase 2 admissions will be filled through the Research Entrance Test (RET) conducted by Lucknow University.
The university has announced that the final merit for Phase 3 admissions will be prepared on the basis of 70 percent weightage of RET marks and 30 percent weightage of interview performance.
Research Entrance Test Pattern and Minimum Qualifying Marks
Lucknow University has also released the detailed pattern for the Research Entrance Test (RET). The entrance examination will consist of:
- 50 percent questions from Research Methodology
- 50 percent subject-specific questions
Candidates belonging to the General category must secure at least 50 percent marks in RET to qualify for the next stage of admission. Reserved category candidates including SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwBD must secure a minimum of 45 percent marks.
Candidates qualifying the entrance examination will have to appear for an interview conducted by the Departmental Research Committee (DRC). During the interview, candidates will be evaluated on their research interest, competence for research and the relevance of their proposed research area.
The university stated that the proposed research should contribute towards new knowledge and meaningful academic advancement.
Annual Fee Structure for Ph.D Programmes
Lucknow University has also released the annual fee structure for various Ph.D programmes.
- Annual fee for regular Ph.D programme: Rs 10,126 plus laboratory fee if applicable
- Annual fee for Part-Time Ph.D Category I: Rs 52,580
- Annual fee for Part-Time Ph.D Category II: Rs 1,52,830
Candidates applying under multiple categories will have to submit separate online application forms for each category.
