About the Department of Legal Affairs

The Department of Legal Affairs (DOLA), functioning under the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, was established in 1961. It plays a crucial role in providing legal advice to various government departments and handling litigation matters on behalf of the Union of India.

About the Internship Opportunity

The Department of Legal Affairs organizes a monthly internship programme for law students and graduates. The aim is to familiarize young aspirants with the functioning of the Department, involving:

  • Research and referencing work
  • Court functioning
  • Tendering legal advice in fields like constitutional law, administrative law, finance law, labour law, arbitration, contract law, economic law, and conveyancing.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Indian law students who have completed:
    • 2nd year of a 3-year LL.B. course
    • 3rd year of a 5-year integrated LL.B. course
  • Law graduates from any recognized university/college.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with advanced computer skills (MS Office, Adobe, infographics, etc.).

Internship Duration

  • The internship will be for 1 month.
  • It usually begins on the first working day of every month.

Location of Internship

Interns will be deployed across different units:

  • Main Secretariat, New Delhi
  • Central Agency Section at Supreme Court
  • Litigation HC Section, Delhi
  • Branch Secretariats at Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru

Selection Procedure

  • 50 interns will be selected every month.
  • Shortlisting will be done as per the official guidelines.
  • Selection details will be communicated via email/Internship portal.

Internship Guidelines

  • Timings: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM (full-time, physical attendance required).
  • Dress Code: Formal – black trousers and white shirt.
  • Accommodation: To be arranged by interns themselves.
  • Confidentiality: Interns must sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
  • Termination: The Department may discontinue any intern’s engagement for unsatisfactory performance or violation of rules.

Honorarium & Certificate

  • Interns will receive an honorarium of ₹1,000 upon successful completion.
  • A Certificate of Internship will be issued subject to:
    • 90% attendance
    • Satisfactory work report approved by the supervising authority
