BHU Fee Hike Row: ABVP Protests Against Sharp Increase in Course and Hostel Fees
📢 Banaras Hindu University Faces Student Protest Over Fee Hike
Varanasi: Banaras Hindu University (BHU), known for providing affordable and quality education, is currently witnessing protests over a significant hike in course and hostel fees. On Saturday, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) raised strong objections against the recent decision of the university administration.
Student representatives met Registrar Prof. Arun Kumar Singh and submitted a memorandum demanding immediate rollback of the increased fees. They warned that failure to reconsider the decision could lead to a large-scale student आंदोलन in the coming days.
💰 Course-Wise Fee Hike Details
According to ABVP representatives, the fee hike has impacted multiple courses and facilities across the university. The increase is being termed as “excessive” and “burdensome” for students.
- Agriculture Institute: Fee increased by around ₹12,000
- PhD Programme: Annual fee raised from ₹1,940 to ₹12,000 (almost 6 times increase)
- LLB: Semester fee increased from ₹1,975 to ₹6,000
- BA-LLB: Annual fee increased from ₹60,000 to ₹72,000
- Hostel Fees: Increased by approximately 50%
- Swimming Fee: Raised from ₹1,150 to ₹1,650
Students claim that such steep hikes will directly impact affordability and access to education.
🎓 “BHU is Lifeline for Poor Students”
ABVP unit president Pallav Suman stated that BHU has historically been a major educational hub for economically weaker sections. He emphasized that the vision of Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya was to make education accessible to all.
He further added that the sudden fee hike may push students from rural and middle-class backgrounds into financial distress, thereby affecting their academic future.
⚠ Students Call Decision Anti-Student
During the memorandum submission, several student leaders, including Vikas Mahto, Madan Gopal, Akanksha Singh, and Megha Mukhopadhyay, expressed dissatisfaction with the administration’s decision.
Students described the move as “authoritarian” and urged the administration to reconsider the decision keeping in mind the financial realities of students.
🔥 Protest Warning and Future Action
ABVP has clearly stated that if the university does not roll back the fee hike, a major protest movement will be launched inside the campus.
The situation remained tense, and all eyes are now on the university administration’s next step. A decision in the coming days will determine whether the issue escalates into a larger student agitation.
📊 Why This Issue Matters
BHU has long been recognized as one of India’s most affordable central universities. Any sharp increase in fees raises serious concerns about accessibility and inclusivity in higher education.
The protest highlights a broader debate on rising education costs and the need to balance institutional funding with student affordability.
