Allahabad University Organizes Seminar on “Constitution and Constitutionalism: The Philosophy of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar”

Prayagraj, November 1, 2025 – A grand seminar on “Constitution and Constitutionalism: The Philosophy of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar” was held at the University of Allahabad on Saturday. The event was graced by Hon’ble Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice B. R. Gavai, Hon’ble Justice Vikram Nath, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, Hon’ble Chief Justice Arun Bhansali of the Allahabad High Court, and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sangita Srivastava.

CJI Justice B. R. Gavai Highlights the Spirit of Indian Democracy

In his keynote address, Chief Justice B. R. Gavai emphasized that the soul of Indian democracy lies in the Constitution. He noted that while many nations have separate constitutions for federal and state levels, India has one single Constitution that governs both the Union and the States.

Explaining India’s judicial structure, he said that the system beginning at the district level and extending to the Supreme Court ensures the realization of justice for all citizens. Citing examples of unstable democracies such as Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, he underlined that India’s stable democracy exists because of the Constitution.

Defending the Collegium System, Justice Gavai said that judicial appointments in India are based on inputs from the Central and State Governments as well as multiple agencies, ensuring transparency and balance.

He added that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s vision of single citizenship strengthened the unity of India and that the separation of powers among the legislature, executive, and judiciary has sustained the country’s democratic framework. Justice Gavai described Article 32 as “the soul of the Constitution,” asserting that without it, the document would be lifeless.

He further stressed that the balance of power between the Union and the States is vital for India’s stability. Speaking about fundamental rights, he said that the right to life includes the right to food, clean air, water, and education. He reiterated that India’s strength lies in its unity in diversity and that social equality and liberalism together can lead to national prosperity.

Justice Vikram Nath: “No One is Above the Constitution”

Addressing the gathering, Hon’ble Justice Vikram Nath described Dr. B. R. Ambedkar as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, who introduced the ideas of liberalism and social justice. He stated that no person stands above the Constitution of India.

Justice Nath highlighted Ambedkar’s fight against caste, gender, and class-based discrimination, emphasizing that his constitutional vision ensured accessible justice for all. He added that CJI Justice Gavai’s tenure would continue to inspire the youth and uphold the ideals of justice and equality.

Chief Justice Arun Bhansali: “Ambedkar’s Vision Built Modern India”

Hon’ble Chief Justice Arun Bhansali of the Allahabad High Court reflected on Dr. Ambedkar’s enduring legacy, stating that his life and work laid the foundation of modern India. He explained that Ambedkar’s approach went beyond drafting a legal document—it was a moral promise to build a nation founded on liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Justice Bhansali said that for Dr. Ambedkar, the Constitution was a tool to eradicate social inequality and untouchability, and his understanding of constitutional morality extended beyond written provisions. “For Ambedkar, the success of Indian democracy depends on the growth of constitutional morality,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sangita Srivastava: “Education Builds the Nation”

In her presidential address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sangita Srivastava expressed pride at the visit of the Chief Justice of India to Allahabad University. Quoting poet Emerson, she described Justice Gavai’s personality as one embodying wisdom and humility.

Prof. Srivastava said that Allahabad University is India’s fourth oldest pillar of higher education and has produced numerous national leaders and scholars. “Education is the true builder of the nation,” she stated.
