BHU Admissions 2025: Over 5104 Seats Still Vacant in UG and PG Courses
More Than 2800 PG Seats Remain Unfilled Even After Six Rounds
Varanasi: The admission process at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has entered a critical stage as 5104 seats remain vacant in postgraduate (PG) and undergraduate (UG) courses, even after one and a half months of counselling. The situation is particularly alarming in PG admissions, where despite four general rounds and two spot rounds, a total of 2816 seats are still unoccupied. These vacant seats are now being targeted through the final mop-up round.
Post-COVID Seat Vacancy Trend Continues
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, BHU has been facing the recurring problem of vacant seats every academic year. This year, the university even reduced intake capacity in nearly 30 programmes, but the situation persists. Out of the 2816 PG seats still vacant, 574 seats are reserved for BHU graduate students, while 2242 seats are open for external candidates. Experts believe that except for general seats, it will be difficult to fill most quota-based seats.
UG Admissions: 2288 Seats Vacant
The undergraduate admissions also face a similar challenge with 2288 seats left unfilled. The breakup of vacant UG seats is as follows:
- General: 867
- OBC: 644
- SC: 388
- ST: 225
- EWS: 164
BHU has planned two additional spot rounds to fill these vacancies.
Mop-Up Round Reporting Extended to 3 Days
BHU has revised its PG mop-up round schedule to give students more flexibility. Earlier, reporting was scheduled for just one day, but now students will have three days (September 6 to 8, 2025) to report. Candidates must download the reporting form from the Samarth portal and complete the process at their respective departments.
The merit list publication date has also been revised from September 8 to September 10, 2025.
