University of Allahabad to Launch Four-Year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) from 2026-27

Prayagraj, September 2, 2025: The University of Allahabad has achieved a historic milestone under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sangita Srivastava. The Department of Education has received official recognition from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to launch the Four-Year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) from the academic session 2026–27.

A Step Towards NEP 2020 Vision

The programme, namely B.A. B.Ed. (BABEd), is a direct outcome of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes transformative reforms in teacher education across India. NEP 2020 envisions multidisciplinary learning, deep knowledge, value formation, and rigorous practical training under the guidance of eminent mentors.

Dual Degree Structure for Students

The ITEP is designed as a dual-major undergraduate programme, wherein students will receive a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree along with a Major in a chosen subject from the Faculty of Arts (B.A.) such as:

  • History
  • Political Science
  • Economics
  • Languages
  • Music
  • Mathematics
  • Sciences
  • Fine Arts

Upon successful completion, graduates will emerge as professionally trained, passionate, and well-equipped teachers prepared to shape the future of school education.

Focus on Content, Pedagogy, and Values

The four-year ITEP will incorporate Indian values, traditions, ethos, and knowledge systems, while also covering essential disciplines such as Sociology, Psychology, Early Childhood Education, Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, and Indian cultural knowledge traditions.

By 2030, as per NEP 2020, the four-year integrated B.Ed. will become the minimum qualification for school teachers across India.

Strong Academic Tradition of the Department of Education

The Department of Education at the University of Allahabad is already known for its prestigious M.Ed. and M.A. in Education programmes. With the addition of the ITEP, the department is set to further strengthen its reputation as a hub for academic excellence and teacher training in India.

Prof. Dhananjay Yadav, Head of the Department of Education, stated:
“The commencement of ITEP is not only an institutional achievement but also a significant step toward preparing a new generation of quality, multi-dimensional teachers dedicated to nation-building.”
